«/i»BIOGRAPHY: !1819 Census of Burke County
      Streeton (sic) Absalom 4 males under 10 1 male 26-45 1 female under 10 1 female 26-45.

Strutton/Stratton family researchers are divided between those who believe that Absalom was married before he married Darcus and that John, Absalom, and perhaps Rhoda, where children of his unknown first wife, and those who believe that Absalom and Darcus were living together before they were officially married and Darcus is the mother of all of Absalom's children. I have no definitive evidence to support either position. However, I have also found no record of a previous marriage for Absalom.

Absolom Stratton appears first in written records on the 1799 Tax Rolls for District 12 in North Carolina with 200 acres and 1 white poll. He next appears on the 1800 Federal Census:

1800 Federal Census Wilkes Co., NC, P 62

Males of 16 and under 26«tab»1
Females of 16 and under 26«tab»1

«tab»I have calculated Absalom's birth year as 1774; that would make him 25/26 years old at the time of the 1800 census, depending on the month of his birth. The effective date of the 1800 census was August 4. I have no information as to the birth date of Darcus Shearman and have estimated her age as 25, born 1775. The male under 10 years old is usually assumed to be Absalom's son, John, born 1799. By 1810, Absalom has three more sons and a daughter.

      Females of 26 and under 45 «tab»1

«tab»There are problems with the children of Absalom. Most researchers list only three sons - John, born 1799; Absolum, born about 1803; and Richard, born 1810 - and one daughter, Suzanne, born 1813.
«tab»On the 1810 census we find four sons under 10 years of age. One is probably John, age 11, who has simply been included in the wrong age bracket. He should be listed as over 10 years old. That leaves three - two of whom would be Absolum, age 7, and Richard, an infant (born 1810 before the effective date of the census, which for 1810 is August 6). The fourth son of Absalom listed on the 1810 census I believe to be Hezekiah Strutton, born 1809, who would be 1 year old.
«tab»The female under 10 cannot be Suzanne, she was not born until 1813. I believe this daughter is Rhoda Strutton, born 1806, who would be 4 years old in 1810.

«tab»On the 1820 Federal Census for Burke Co. we find:

1820 Federal Census Burke Co., NC, P 25
      Absolum Stratton
      Males under 10«tab»«tab»«tab»2
Males of 10 and under 16«tab»«tab»1

Females of 10 and under 16«tab»«tab»1
      Females of 45 and up«tab»«tab»1

«tab»We now have six males in Absalom's household to identify:

      «tab»Male #1 under 10 - unknown at this time.«tab»
«tab»Male #2 under 10 - Richard, born 1810. The effective date of this census is August 7. Richard was listed on the 1810 census as under 10, indicating he was born that year prior to the census date of August 6. He should be listed in the next age bracket, since he is now 10 years old. (But census takers, and parents, made mistakes.)
      «tab»Male #3 of 10 and under 16 - Hezekiah, born 1809, age 11.
      «tab»Male #4 between 16 and 18 - Absolum, born 1803, age 17.
«tab»Male #5 of 19 and under 26 - This one is a problem. It could be John, born 1799, age 21. But John married Alydia Clark on 16 April 1820. He should not have been included in this household, since the effective date of the census was August 7. However, I have not found John listed on any other census record for 1820. It is possible that on the actual enumeration date, he was still in the household. This needs to be verified.
      «tab»Male #6 of 45 and up - Absalom, born 1774, age 46.

      «tab»And four females:

      «tab»Female #1 under 10 - unknown at this time.
      «tab»Female #2 under 10 - Suzanne, born 1813, age 7.
      «tab»Female #3 of 10 and under 16 - Rhoda, born 1806, age 14.
      «tab»Female #4 of 45 and up - Darcus, born 1775, age 45.

«tab»There are two unidentified children on this census - one male and one female under 10 years of age. It is always possible that they died before reaching adulthood. It is also possible that they are the children of Absalom's brother Joel. Joel appears on the 1810 census with his wife and two children under 10 years of age, a son and a daughter. If these are Joel's children living with Absalom, they are in the wrong age brackets. After 1810, I have found no record of Joel and his family. With more research we may be able to identify these children.

«tab»Moving on to 1830 we find:

1830 Federal Census Burke Co., NC
      Absalom Strutton
      Males of 15 and under 20«tab»1«tab»Richard age 19 b 1810
      Males of 20 and under 30«tab»1«tab»Hezekiah age 21 b 1809
      Males of 50 and under 60«tab»1«tab»Absalom age 56 b 1774
      Females of 10 and under 15«tab»1«tab»Unidentified female b. 1816 - 1820
      Females of 50 and under 60«tab»1«tab»Darcus age 55 b 1775

«tab»Richard was first listed on a census record in 1810 as an infant, born before the census date of August 6. On this record he is listed as under 20. The effective date of the census for 1830 was June 1. This would indicate that Richard was born between June 1 and August 6; he has not yet had his 20«sup»th«/sup» birthday. According to his enlistment record with the Confederate Army [see fn 12], he was age 51 when he enlisted on July 4, 1861. So his birthday must fall between June 1 and July 4, 1810. Both John and Absolum have married and left home - John in 1820 and Absolum perhaps about 1821/1822 since he is listed on the 1830 Federal Census Blount Co., TN, as married and with four children under the age of 10.
«tab»Rhoda is no longer in the household; she married George Goble in 1827. Suzanne would be 17 years old in 1830, so she cannot be the female between 10 and 15 yeas old listed on this record. She was married to [Unknown] Furr before she married Henry K. Dills in 1838, so it is probable that she married Mr. Furr before 1830 and is no longer in Absalom's household. Our unidentified female remains unidentified.
